The Nigeria Opposition Coalition, CUPP says they are saddened by the Military Coup/Peoples Revolt in Mali but declares that they heartily welcomes the belated resignation of the disgraced Malian President Keita and dissolution of the Parliament in the early hours of Wednesday.

In a statement issued by CUPP Spokesperson and PRO West Africa Opposition Spokespersons Forum, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere  he noted that it is highly unfortunate that Mr. Keita was willing to drag his country into anarchy just because he wanted to cling to power despite being unpopular with his citizens.

“We urge the Malian People to remain vigilant until democracy is restored with the conduct of early elections and the immediate release of kidnapped Opposition leader who has been in captivity for about five months now.

“As we wait for the official statement from our brothers in the opposition in Mali, we align our position with the West African Opposition Spokespersons who in our early morning emergency zoom meeting that ended hours ago have welcomed the belated resignation of the disgraced president and have advised other leaders in Africa not to continue to take their people for granted and continue to abuse their office and fail in their duties like Mali President did.

“We hope the leaders of the new regime in Mali will enact a transition process that will lead to early election and also work hard to release the Opposition leader who has been kidnapped by jihadist group before Mali stability can be fully restored.

“We urge the M5-RFP opposition along with the June 5 Movement (named after the date of its first protest) to ensure that the Opposition family remains one in Mali until democracy is fully restored, the dying  economy revived and the growing power of the terrorist groups and armed killer groups that have taken over large areas of the Country are destroyed.

“CUPP will continue to monitor the situation in Mali and shall continue to stand with the People of Mali.
