The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has responded to Amnesty International’s allegations that over 10,000 civilians have died in Nigerian military detention camps since the Boko Haram insurgency began in the North East. The military describes these claims as “shocking, lacking in merit, and mischievous,” especially given the current stage of the counter-terrorism war.

According to the Defence Headquarters, the Nigerian military operates within the bounds of international humanitarian law and the laws of armed conflict. They emphasize that they are a professional force, and it’s essential to set the record straight.

The military’s response comes after Amnesty International’s press conference on December 5, 2024, where they made these allegations. The Defence Headquarters says it is not willing to engage in a war of words with Amnesty International but feels it’s necessary to correct the narrative.

It’s worth noting that Amnesty International has previously reported on human rights abuses in Nigeria, including arbitrary arrests, detentions, and extrajudicial executions. However, the military’s response suggests that these allegations are unfounded and mischievous.
