The Nigerian Navy has achieved significant milestones in its ongoing efforts to combat crude oil theft and maritime crimes in the South-South and South-West regions of Nigeria. Operation Delta Sanity II, which was launched on December 30, 2024, has yielded impressive results, with numerous arrests, seizures, and deactivation of illegal refinery sites.
Some notable successes recorded in February 2025 include:
– *Seizure of Stolen Crude Oil and PMS*: On February 1, 2025, a wooden boat laden with 19 x 250 liters drums of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) was seized around Effiat creek, Akwa Ibom State. Similar seizures were made on February 5, 9, and 11, 2025, with a total of over 129,300 liters of stolen crude oil and PMS recovered. – *Deactivation of Illegal Refinery Sites*: On February 12, 2025, an illegal refinery site with 5 cooking tanks, 4 metal storage tanks, and 15 dug-out pits was deactivated and seized around Isaka, Ogajama general area of Rivers State. Another site with 3 refining ovens, 3 receiving units, and 2 wooden boats was also deactivated around Clough Creek in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. – *Arrest of Suspects and Seizure of Equipment*: On February 17, 2025, two suspected vandals with 2 saws used in cutting the flowline and one wooden boat were arrested along Well 17T Flowline in Rivers State.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Mr. Gbenga Komolafe, Nigeria’s daily crude oil production has risen to about 1.75 million barrels per day, confirming the effectiveness of Operation Delta Sanity.
The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to combating maritime crimes and safeguarding the nation’s waters.
