The president of the Nigerian Labour Congress, (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero has assured the national leadership of the newly affiliated Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria [MOUN] of their total support as they strive to stabilise as a body.
Ajaero gave this assurance when the leadership of the union led by its president, Comrade Julius Oghenevwegba Bobi paid him a courtesy call in his office in Abuja on Friday.
The NLC president elucidated on the benefits and purpose of the Congress to its affiliate bodies, while pointing out that this union, (MOUN), is the 55th affiliate body of the NLC. He bemoaned the insensitivity on the part of government for always making cyclists the scapegoat whenever an accident occures, “The idea of banning cyclists as a result of accidents is an indication of the clear insensitivity of government authorities, who are always prejudicial whenever theft cases are executed to mean cyclists are the ones. The questions are:
“If you allege that they are the ones and you ban them when they are not, who then is wrong? Again, what provision have you made for them? Hence the government has refused to provide jobs for these category of people, how can they survive with their families? When vehicles engage in accidents and or being used by arm robbers, does this make the government to ban vehicles? The answer is absolute NO. These are questions that are to be answered before talking of banning cyclists.
The National President however expressed optimism that with the coming of the Union, the issues of indiscriminate judgement of banning cyclists all because of an alleged cases of armed robbery and all other inhuman treatment would be a thing of the past.
Comrade Ajaero who apparently has been so passionate about the coming of MOUN advised the leadership to put their house in order, and operate for at least six months before considering to organize their National Convention. He stressed that it would be very imperative for the state chapters where the delegates would come from to have fully taken off before any idea of a National Convention. He promised that NLC would avail them their total support when the convention is to be held.
The NLC president in his magnanimity also said that the leadership of MOUN in the interim is free to make use of their office all over the country as a take off place while still trying to put their office in place. He said other affiliate bodies of the Union would be duly informed of their existence.
Meanwhile, Comrade Ajaero cautioned MOUN leadership to remain apolitical in other to avoid situations where politicians will use their members to manipulate their interests. “Again, all members should eschew greed and be satisfied with what they have, as this idiosyncrasy among others has destroyed many unions. And, should there be any problems or issues to be resolved, we are readily available to resolve it, as my phone number is 24hours on to attend to any issues requiring his attention.
Earlier, the President of MOUN, Comrade Julius Bobi FCPAN TCP highlighted on the purpose of their visit which he said is majorly to affiliate with NLC. He declared futher that the union is formidable to help MOUN achieve its dream and objectives.
