Nasarawa State Governor, Engineer Abdullahi Sule has underscored the significance of education as the all-time solution to the countless challenges facing mankind, stressing that in the current global race, there is no room for ignorance.
Engineer Sule stated this while delivering a goodwill message on the occasion of the combined convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), on Saturday.
According to the Governor, there is no investment that can be too much to make in the area of education.
While commending the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, for expanding opportunities for the citizens in the area of education, provision of infrastructure, as well as capacity building in line with global standards, Engineer Sule highlighted on the inroads made by both his administration and the university in the area of education.
The Governor said, under his leadership, there is no limit to the effort to further develop education, adding that explains the decision to allocate 26 percent of the state’s 2020 budget to the sector, in line with the UNESCO benchmark.
He stated that in order to fast-track the development of the university, and as stakeholders, the state government intervened by donating 206 hectares of lands for the permanent site of the institution, the newly constructed Lafia General Hospital to serve as a teaching hospital for the institution following the introduction of medical and pharmaceutical courses.
Also, the construction of a female hostel at the permanent site, 1.2km road from the multi-disciplinary research laboratory to the hostel area, as well as offering automatic employment and award of scholarship to five first class students of the university.
In the same vein, Engineer Sule pointed out that the state government spends N29m monthly on students feeding in boarding schools across the state.
“Our modest effort in this direction has created tremendous impact in the welfare and wellbeing of our students,” he added.
The Governor commended his predecessor, Senator (Dr.) Umaru Tanko Al-makura, for his far reaching impact towards the development of the state, including education.
While congratulating the graduating students, Engineer Sule urged them to see their certificates as more than meal tickets, but to go and build their communities, nation and humanity as a whole.
In his speech at the event, Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Muhammad Sanusi Liman, disclosed that the combined convocation was for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th graduating sets, from the 2015/2016 to 2018/2019 academic sessions.
Prof. Liman further disclosed that in all, 1447 students graduated from the institution, comprising 849 males and 598 females, out of which, 29 graduated with first class degrees, 379 with second class upper, 696 with second class lower, 310 graduated with third class degrees, while 33 got pass.
