NSC Moves to Settle Super Eagles’ Allowances in Morocco with ₦1 Billion Disbursement

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has restored calm in the Super Eagles’ camp in Morocco following a brief training boycott by players over unpaid allowances and bonuses.

Reliable sources confirmed that an NSC delegation arrived in Rabat on Wednesday afternoon with ₦1 billion, which was immediately disbursed — part directly to the players and the balance to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for administrative purposes.

This development contradicts earlier media reports claiming that the NSC had already released ₦1 billion to the NFF for the team’s preparation and payments ahead of the World Cup playoffs.

According to an official source within the NSC, the ₦1 billion fund had indeed been approved earlier for the NFF to settle outstanding payments and support logistics for the playoffs in Rabat. However, the funds only reached the team and the federation on Wednesday.

“What we know is that the ₦1 billion approval for the playoffs was only recently released. Unfortunately, before the funds got to the team, the media space was already flooded with claims that the NFF had received the money long before the players assembled in Morocco,” an NSC chieftain disclosed.

He added that following a joint meeting between the NSC, NFF officials, and team representatives, all issues were amicably resolved, and the players are now fully focused on Thursday’s crucial playoff encounter.

“The missed training session will not affect their performance. The players are determined to qualify for the World Cup and represent Africa with pride,” the official assured.

Investigations revealed that the players’ brief protest was prompted by uncertainty over the timing of their long-awaited AFCON and World Cup qualifiers’ bonuses. When assurances were not forthcoming, the squad temporarily halted training until clarifications were made.

It would be recalled that the NFF, under the supervision of former Sports Minister John Enoh, had previously reached an agreement with the players to clear arrears dating back to 2019. Those payments were reportedly settled last year following the release of ₦12 billion by the federal government for the 2024 AFCON tournament.

The NFF subsequently requested an additional ₦5 billion to offset residual debts owed to players, hotels, and airlines.

Meanwhile, a high-powered delegation comprising officials from the NSC, NFF, and members of the Senate and House Committees on Sports departed for Morocco today to lend support to the team ahead of their decisive match.
