Power Minister Resigns to Pursue Oyo Governorship Bid

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu has formally resigned from office, citing his intention to pursue a gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State ahead of the next electoral cycle.
In a resignation letter dated April 22 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the minister said his decision would take effect from April 30, 2026, to allow for a “smooth and orderly handover of responsibilities.”
The outgoing minister expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve, describing his appointment as a privilege and a chance to contribute to national development, particularly in Nigeria’s critical power sector.
“It has been a rare honour to contribute to national development under your leadership and to play a role in advancing reforms in the power sector—one of the most critical foundations of Nigeria’s industrial growth and economic transformation,” he wrote.
He explained that his resignation was driven by a long-standing ambition to govern Oyo State, an aspiration he said dates back to 2016 during his tenure as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. He recalled resigning from the apex bank in 2018 to pursue the same goal.
The minister noted that his decision also aligns with the provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2026, which restricts political office holders from holding executive positions while seeking elective office.
His exit marks a significant development in the federal cabinet, particularly within the power sector, where ongoing reforms have been central to the administration’s economic agenda.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the Presidency regarding a replacement.
