The Minister of Youths and Sports, Sunday Dare has reveal plans by his Ministry and the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory to bring back to life the moribund 5000 capacity Moshood Abiola Stadium car park.
Speaking with www.theajasanews.com in Abuja on Friday, the minister noted that part of the plan is to convert the car park into a commercial park that would generate income for the Federal Government and also provide space for car owners to park their vehicles with absolute safety.
Speaking on the involvement of the Ministry of the Federal Capital in the renovation plan of the National stadium, Dare noted that it is part of the plan of President Muhammadu Buhari to create synergy and partnership among Ministries Department and Agencies of government (MDAs) that will bring about overall economic benefits to the people, especially bringing back to use decayed public infrastructures and monuments across the country.
Dare emphatically stated that Ministries activities dovetailed to each other, adding, this is why President Buhari mandated all the Ministers to work together and achieve common gains. He said: ‘’What we’ve seen today is the spirit of partnership with the FCT Minister considering that this national edifice is located in the Federal Capital and in line with our efforts to really bring this place back to life, we will start with the 5, 000 parking capacity and also look into other areas of collaboration’’.
The Minister noted emphasized that the MKO Abiola stadium is indeed coming back to live, stressing, ‘’already Dangote have agreed to restore the football pitch, the score board and the lighting system in the stadium, Work is expected to start in few days and we will adopt the same method for several other stadia across the country.
He assured that between now and March next year, the country should boast of at least four FIFA standard football pitches and stadia that should be able to host virtually any FIFA tournaments.
The FCT Minister, Mohammed Bello had said after the tour on Thursday President Buhari in his second tenure encouraged horizontal communication among ministries to enhance rapid development of infrastructures across the nation. He explained that himself and the Youth and Sports Minister have been in constant touch synergising on how to make the MKO Abiola stadium in Abuja, a national pride.
According to Bello, ‘’one of our greatest public building in the country is the MKO stadium and it was designed in such a way that it will complement other activities of the city, so we have decided that we are going to upgrade and resuscitate the 5, 000 car park facilities to ease grid lock of vehicles on the high way.’’ He said that within the next few months, gradually and steadily we are going to work together to making sure that this edifice will be national pride to all Nigerians.
The FCT Minister said deliberate efforts are being put in place to ensure that each activity should serve without disrupting other activities of the city, stressing that in the master plan of the city centre, the stadium is expected to be linked through an under pass to the railway station, adding that this is to enhance ease of movement for members of the public coming to and fro of the MKO stadium.
Bello assured that the present government is doing everything possible within its limited resources to consolidate, upgrade and maintain existing facilities.
