Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike has dropped two notable predictions for the 2023 general elections. The two predictions are interrelated and if one happens, it is highly possible for the other to occur. Wike knows much about elections and he is in the right position to forecast events and results.
Whether he will be correct or not, Mr. Wike has forecast that the All Progressives Congress would crash or collapse before the 2023 general elections. That is the most critical assessment he had made about the party. He even gave reasons for his assertion.
The governor, whose tenure ends in 2023, must have watched how chaotic things are in the APC. He argued that the presidential primary election would he albatross of the All Progressives Congress. He said that the exercise would be full of turbulence and the party wouldn’t survive it.
The APC would have to choose a candidate to represent it in the next national elections. The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari will ultimately end in 2023 and as a matter of constitutionality, there would be a replacement. It is that process of replacement that would lead to turbulence.
The APC faces a tough time now. There are debates on its convention, presidential ticket and other sundry matters. It is true that the party enjoys majority at all levels now. But in Wike’s perspective, the APC would face turbulence in the presidential race, and it won’t survive it.
The second prediction he made hinges on the first one. He said that the People’s Democratic Party would win the most coveted presidential election in 2023. The PDP was removed from power in 2015 when former president Goodluck Jonathan couldn’t win his second term bid. Since that time, the PDP has been at the backseat reserved for the opposition.
Wike gave a particular condition for the success of the PDP in the poll. As reported by the Punch Newspaper, he opined that with the current system of the Independent National Electoral Commission, the PDP would emerge.
The governor wants the electoral body to continue its fairness and transparency in the conduct of the elections. Recent polls have shown a high level of professionalism on the part of the body. Hence, Wike predicted that if the system continues, the PDP would emerge.
