The Defence Attachés of the United Kingdom and Germany to Nigeria have reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to supporting Nigeria’s military efforts in combating terrorism and insurgency in the North East.

Brigadier Tom Harper of the United Kingdom and Colonel Boris Bovecamp of Germany gave the assurance during a visit to the Headquarters of the Theatre Command, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), in Maiduguri on Wednesday.

During the visit, Brigadier Harper underscored the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, built on mutual respect and shared values such as democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. He commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their sustained efforts in tackling insurgency in the North East, particularly under Operation HADIN KAI.

He also reiterated the United Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s military capacity through continued training support provided by the British Military Advisory Team (BMATT).

Similarly, the German Defence Attaché, Colonel Bovecamp, said his visit was aimed at identifying new areas of collaboration, particularly in capacity building and regional cooperation. He noted that such partnerships would enhance operational effectiveness and strengthen collective efforts to defeat terrorism.

In his remarks, the Theatre Commander of Operation HADIN KAI, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, praised the contributions of both countries to Nigeria’s counter-insurgency operations. He said training programmes supported by international partners have significantly improved the skills and operational readiness of troops in the theatre.

Abubakar also identified technical expertise, equipment provision, and logistics support as key areas for future collaboration between Nigeria and its international partners.

The visit concluded with the signing of the visitors’ register, exchange of souvenirs, and a group photograph, symbolising the strengthening partnership between Nigeria and its allies in the fight against insurgency.

Operation HADIN KAI is the Nigerian military’s ongoing counter-insurgency operation aimed at restoring peace and stability in the North East region.
