The Delta Unity Alliance (DUA) has commended the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) for what it described as a “model democratic exercise” following the successful conduct of the union’s 2025 National Congress election, which saw the re-election of Chief Ese Gam Owe as President-General.
Chief Owe secured a resounding victory with 432 votes, defeating his opponent, Chief Simeon Ohwofa, who polled 178 votes, in an election widely praised for its transparency, orderliness, and peaceful conduct. The poll was held at the historic Urhobo House, Uvwiamuge-Agbarho, where delegates and observers noted the absence of violence, confusion, or logistical lapses.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the DUA congratulated Chief Owe and all members of the newly elected executive, describing the exercise as “a benchmark for democratic excellence” at a time when many elections across the country suffer credibility challenges.
“At a time when elections at different levels of governance are plagued by logistical failures, mistrust, and needless tension, the UPU has proven that credible, transparent, and peaceful elections are still possible in Nigeria,” the Alliance said.
DUA urged electoral bodies nationwide — from local government commissions to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) — to understudy the UPU election process, particularly its transparent accreditation, calm voting procedure, efficient collation, and prompt announcement of results.
The Alliance also applauded Chief Simeon Ohwofa for displaying maturity and sportsmanship, noting that democracy thrives when contestants respect outcomes and uphold the unity of their community.
As Chief Owe begins his new tenure, DUA called for policies that prioritise unity, youth involvement, cultural revitalisation, and strong development advocacy for Urhobo people at home and in the diaspora.
“Democracy grows stronger when credibility leads the process. The UPU has raised the bar. Other electoral bodies must now rise to meet it,” the Alliance stated.
