Lagos State Police Command have raised an alarm over the purported plan by members of the outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), to carry out attacks in the State, noting that effort is being made to neutralise them.
The State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, made the disclosure during a stakeholders’ Town Hall Meeting on Security at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja.
The event was organises by the State Government to brainstorm on ways of finding solutions to worsening security challenges in the country.
The meeting was attended by religious leaders, traditional rulers, political leaders, civil societies, road transport workers, youth representatives among others.
Delivering his address, Odumosu said, “For a few weeks now, the Command has been inundated with complaints of robbery in traffic. This challenge has been risen up to, as all the DPOs and other tactical teams of the Command have been deployed to tackle this headlong. 65 of such suspects have been arrested in the past four weeks.
“However, the Command’s hands in prosecuting them are being tied by JUSUN strike. As a corollary to this, the Command wishes to appeal to the State Government to take further steps at resolving the industrial action embarked upon by the judicial workers in the State. It has crippled activities of the Courts. This is seriously affecting administration of criminal justice in the State.
“Furthermore, the Command has taken notice of agitators for Oodua Republic by some Yoruba separatist groups and the threats to disrupt law and order in the State. Twenty four of these groups have been identified and being closely monitored.
“Similarly, the threat of IPOB to attack soft targets in Lagos is equally being put on the radar of the Command intelligence gathering and other security services in the State. Strategies are being put in place to neutralize their activities.
“The Command is using this medium to solicit for the support of all and sundry to be vigilant at all times and report any suspicious person or movement to security agencies. Let us adopt the slogan of “when you see something, say something”.
“Cultism in the State is nose-diving. Thanks to the new law enacted by the State Government which in addition to punishment for the cultists, is prescribes 15yrs imprisonment for the landlord and anybody that harbour them. Same 15rys is proposed for anybody that allowed his/her facilities, e.g Hotel, Event Centre, vehicle e.t.c to be used by the cultists. Parents of the culprits are equally not spared as they are to serve 2yrs jail.
“Trials of apprehended and investigated suspected cultists under this law has been yielding positive result, as owners of facilities hitherto being used by them and their parents are now freely giving them out to us. More of this collaboration is solicited for. This is Community Policing and security partnership that works,” the CP said.
