The battle for the 2023 presidential ticket of the PDP appears to have shifted to the South after the NEC of the PDP approved that the North should produce the National Chairman of the PDP.

The Southern PDP politicians are at war according to Nation newspaper over the presidential ticket of the PDP and zoning of key positions in the party.

This is expected because many of them who want to contest the 2023 presidential election are strategizing on how to achieve their goals. That will form the basis of our discussion in this article.

Why are Southern Governors at war over zoning of the 2023 presidential ticket of PDP?

The refusal of the PDP to make an official statement on which zone should grab the 2023 presidential ticket of the PDP unsettles them.

Also, they are panicking among themselves that the party may consider Bala Mohammed’s report which recommended that the 2023 presidential ticket of the PDP be thrown open for the best person to grab it.

Some Southern PDP leaders like Governor Wike who is interested in the 2023 presidential election appear to have slowed down on his strategy since the PDP is yet to make an official announcement.

They have channelled their energy to struggle for the key positions zoned to the South ahead of the October 30 and 31 national conventions of the PDP.

Those with presidential ambition are fighting to ensure that their preferred candidates who will protect their interests make it to the new NWC of the PDP that will emerge by ending of October.

Already Governors Wike and Obaseki have disagreed on who should emerge as the National Secretary of the PDP.

Why is there a clash of interest between Obaseki and Wike?

The Southern PDP politicians have agreed that South-South should produce the National Secretary of the party to compensate the region since Uche Secondus didn’t finish his tenure.

However, Governor Obaseki disagrees with Wike on the candidate they should put forward. While Wike wants his ally because of his interest, Obaseki prefers some who will represent the general interest of South-South.
