Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the performance of newly engaged waste management contractors, warning that the Administration will not tolerate excuses or continued poor service delivery.

Wike, who spoke on Tuesday after inspecting road projects in Kuje Area Council, said he had received numerous complaints from residents and stakeholders over the increasing level of filth across the city barely two weeks after the contractors commenced operations.

“I’ve gone round personally; I’m not really satisfied with the performance of the contractors involved in waste disposal,” he said. “A good dancer is known by the first step he takes. The moment you take the first step, you would have known whether this is a good dancer or not.”

The Minister summoned the contractors to a meeting at the FCDA conference hall, where he delivered a stern message, stressing that key districts such as Asokoro, Maitama, Wuse and the Airport Road corridor must reflect a clean and orderly capital city.

He noted that while waste management poses challenges globally, especially in developing countries, the FCT Administration will not accept excuses for non-performance, adding that the contractors’ continued engagement depends on immediate improvement.

“I felt that I don’t want to take a decision without calling you back to say look, disappoint your enemies, disappoint your detractors so that you continue with the job,” he said. “If you don’t work, you won’t eat. So take it very seriously.”

Wike also warned that a task force would soon be established to enforce strict sanitation rules, including penalizing residents who dump refuse indiscriminately or fail to bag their waste properly.

“If I see that you don’t bag your refuse and you put it on the ground in front of your house, I will take it inside your house. We cannot continue like this like a country without discipline,” he stated.

The Minister appealed to residents to cooperate by paying sanitation fees and adhering to waste disposal guidelines, assuring that contractors who perform diligently will receive prompt payment.

While reaffirming the Administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, including the timely completion of road projects in Kuje, Wike maintained that cleanliness and environmental discipline remain a top priority of the FCT Administration under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
