…Flags Off Construction of Key Katampe Link Road
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has assured residents of a historic infrastructural transformation across the territory by 2026, describing the coming year as a turning point in the FCT’s 50-year history.
Wike gave the assurance on Thursday, October 9, 2025, while flagging off the construction of the Collector Road CN2 in Katampe District — a strategic project designed to open up the Gishiri area and improve connectivity between Mabushi and Katampe.
According to the Minister, 2026 will mark “a massive infrastructure shift never seen since the FCT was created,” as Abuja celebrates its golden jubilee in February.
“Next year will be a different year altogether. It will be the year that truly defines Abuja’s future — a massive infrastructure turnaround like no other,” Wike declared.
Speaking on the new Katampe road project, Wike recalled that after commissioning the Gishiri Interchange and Dualization Project in June, he directed the contractor, China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC), to begin the linking works even before the formal contract approval, to maximize development impact.
“To the glory of God, they went ahead in faith. Now, we are in the process of awarding the contract, and look at the progress already made. I must commend CGC for their trust and confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration,” the Minister said.
The Minister further disclosed that the Katampe project is one of several earmarked for commissioning during President Tinubu’s third anniversary celebrations, noting that its completion will boost property values and stimulate business activities in the area.
“This is one of the projects that Mr. President will inaugurate on his third anniversary, and I am confident they will deliver on time,” he added.
Wike also commended CGC for its involvement in other major FCT projects, including the Karu–Karshi–Orozo–Bwari water supply project and the dualization of the Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX) — an eight-lane carriageway connecting Apo and Wasa Districts.
He urged the company to continue promoting local content and creating employment for Abuja residents, while calling on citizens to support government efforts toward timely completion.
The Minister, however, expressed concern over renewed cases of vandalism targeting the Light-Up Abuja Project, which aims to enhance night-time security across the city.
“We have noticed acts of sabotage — lights deliberately cut off, especially along the Airport Road — but I urge CGC not to relent. These are distractions, but my team and I are resolute. If there’s one project we must achieve, it is to fully light up Abuja,” he vowed.
Earlier, the Acting Head of Service of the FCTA, Madam Grace Sabanti Nathan, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for his consistent support and to the National Assembly for backing the FCT’s development initiatives. She praised Wike for his “pragmatic and dynamic leadership,” which, she said, has visibly transformed the capital.
Providing a technical overview, the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, described the Collector Road CN2 as an inter-district link connecting Mabushi to Katampe.
He explained that the 3.8-kilometre road, which begins near the Next Cash and Carry Junction on Ahmadu Bello Way and loops through Mabushi Bus Terminal to N16 Junction by Gishiri Village, will feature asphalt pavement, drainage, water distribution networks, power and telecom ducts, and street lighting.
Dauda added that the project will ease movement, enhance security, reduce travel time, and boost the socio-economic value of Katampe District.
In his remarks, the Deputy Managing Director of CGC Nigeria Limited, Mr. Lv Haiming, commended the FCT Minister for prioritizing infrastructure and pledged to complete the project within eight months.
“Roads create wealth, and this project will do just that. It will generate at least 500 jobs and open up new economic opportunities for local communities,” Haiming assured.
