The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has expressed the FCT Administration’s commitment to strengthening bilateral economic relations between Abuja and Turkey, particularly with its largest city, Istanbul.
Barr. Wike made this known in Abuja on Monday, November 17, 2025, when he received the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehemet Poroy, on a courtesy visit.
During the visit, Barr. Wike highlighted the existing cordial relationship between Nigeria and Turkey and noted the significant presence of Turkish nationals engaged in various businesses within Abuja.
He reaffirmed the FCTA’s commitment to providing a free and secure environment where Turkish citizens can carry out their legitimate businesses without molestation, and expressed the FCT Administration’s keen interest in exploring concrete partnerships to boost economic exchange.
The Minister also invited the Ambassador to approach the FCT Administration with any specific areas where assistance or cooperation is required.
He said, “I would like to particularly see how we can partner with Istanbul to improve our economic relations. I know there are a lot of Turkish nationals who are here carrying out one business or the other. It is our intention to provide a free environment where your citizens will carry out their businesses without molestation.
“Of course, you know, the relationship between Nigeria and Turkey has been very cordial, the economic relationship has also been very commendable, and we want to improve on it. So, we think we can partner with you.
“If there are things in particular you believe will be of assistance from the administration, do not hesitate to approach us. We will be able to help. Also, explore ways in which FCT can cooperate and benefit in terms of economic ties with the city of Istanbul or any other city you think can have very good economic ties with us”, Barr. Wike stated.
He thanked the Turkish Embassy for expediting the visa process for Nigerian and Abuja residents, which, he said, has eased travel for businessmen and encouraged greater trade.
In his submission to the Minister, the Turkish Ambassador emphasized that the economic aspect is perhaps the most significant component of the relationship between the two nations and noted the potential for increased bilateral trade between the two countries.
The Ambassador reiterated that the simplification of visa procedures for Nigerian businessmen was a crucial initial step to facilitate people-to-people and business-to-business contact.
He used the opportunity to thank the FCT Minister and the institutions under his authority for the excellent services they provide to the diplomatic community and residents of Abuja.
