Wike Signals Escalation in Rivers Power Struggle Ahead of 2027

The simmering political crisis in Rivers State appears set for a major escalation as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has openly signalled a renewed push to reclaim political control of the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

During separate “thank-you” visits to Tai and Eleme Local Government Areas, the former Rivers governor declared that a new phase of political engagement would commence in January, urging his supporters to prepare for what he described as a decisive struggle to “correct” the current leadership direction in the state.

Wike, who stopped short of mentioning Governor Siminalayi Fubara by name, nevertheless questioned the legitimacy of claims that the incumbent enjoys genuine political backing, dismissing such narratives as contrived. He maintained that his political structure remains the authentic mandate base in Rivers.

Warning against what he described as betrayal of political agreements, the FCT minister accused unnamed actors of reneging on commitments, insisting that such conduct would no longer be tolerated in Rivers politics. He further downplayed the influence of financial power in elections, arguing that political organisation and resolve, rather than wealth, have historically determined electoral outcomes in the state.

In a veiled reference to the peace accord reportedly brokered by President Bola Tinubu to ease tensions between rival camps, Wike suggested that key terms of the agreement had been violated. He hinted that details of the understanding reached before the President would soon be made public.

At Eleme, Wike linked the Rivers political realignment to broader national calculations, stating that efforts were underway to support President Tinubu’s second-term ambition while pursuing a change of leadership in Rivers State in 2027.

The visits also served to consolidate Wike’s influence at the grassroots, as local political leaders and lawmakers in both Tai and Eleme publicly reaffirmed their allegiance to him and pledged to follow his lead ahead of the next governorship race.

With January identified as the starting point for intensified political mobilisation, the declaration has effectively set the tone for what is shaping up to be a fiercely contested and potentially divisive political season in Rivers State as 2027 draws closer.
