Learning is a key part of human existence on earth and it is a continuous process until one dies and goes to the world beyond.

Ahead of its national convention amid leadership tussle, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has made some key political decisions that need to be discussed. According to a report by The Punch, a leaked document exposed how the PDP zoned key national leadership posts in the party to various regions in Nigeria. It also gave some explanations why the zonings were done the way they were done.

The zoning committee which is headed by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State zoned the post of the National Chairman to South West. It explained that South West has never produced the National Chairman of PDP while all the other zones have produced the occupant of that post more than once except South South-South zone which produced an occupant of the post once in the person of Prince Uche Secondus. The PDP zoned the National Secretary to the North and other posts were shared to various zones according to the factors taken into consideration by the committee.

Key lessons to learn from PDP’s zoning decisions.

PDP was impartial in its decisions. The committee listed all the past National Chairmen of the party and their zones. It became very glaring that the South West is missing. The zone has never produced a National Chairman of the party since it was founded in 1998. With that, the party decided to zone it to the South West to ensure that the zone produces the National Chairman this time. That is being impartial in power-sharing and being transparent in the rationale behind its decisions. The PDP and All Progressives Congress, APC can do the same thing with regards to the agitations for the South East to produce the next President in 2023.

Just like South West in the PDP Chairmanship case, the South East has not produced the President of Nigeria since 1999. The fair and impartial thing to do is to allow the zone to produce the next President to take over from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023. It is a fact staring everybody in the face that South East deserves to be given the chance to produce the President.

Again, PDP was unanimous in its decision. After analyzing the facts of the zones the PDP National Chairmen emerged from in the past years, the PDP was unanimous in zoning it to the South West because it has never produced the National Chairman before. APC, PDP and other major political parties can do the same for the South East ahead of 2023. They did that for the North in 2015 and 2019 by zoning their presidential tickets to the North to ensure that the President emerges from there. They can learn from this development and zone their tickets to the South East to enable the region to produce the next President.

Finally, PDP took the decisions in a transparent and fair manner to allow peace to reign. This can be done too amid the separatist agitations in the South East over marginalization of the region. Let the major political parties be fair, considerate and unbiased in deciding which zone to give its Presidential ticket to. Let them also carry all regions along and take decisions that will strengthen national unity and allay the fears of domination. If PDP can do it within its party, the same PDP and other parties can do it at national level ahead of 2023 general elections.
