1. Raw Milk

It is one of the most dangerous sources of foodborne illness and is prohibited in some states. It is animal milk that has not been heated or pasteurized to kill bacteria. E. coli, listeria, campylobacter, and salmonella can all be found in raw milk. They can cause days of diarrhea, vomiting, and serious illnesses such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, which can result in paralysis. Check the label on your milk container to ensure it has been pasteurized, especially if you buy it at a farmer’s market.

2. Eggs

Salmonella-tainted eggs cause 79,000 cases of food poisoning and 30 deaths in the United States each year. Salmonella can be passed to eggs by chickens before the shell forms. Bacteria can also infect eggs via poultry faeces. Refrigerate eggs at or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Uncooked eggs are required in some products and recipes. Use pasteurized eggs (which are difficult to come by) or make your own by submerging eggs in 140°F water for at least 312 minutes using sous vide machine. The eggs may thicken slightly as they cook.

3. Sprouts

They’re seeds that have germinated. Since 2006, raw and lightly cooked sprouts, particularly clover and alfalfa, have caused multistate outbreaks of food poisoning. Salmonella, listeria, and E. coli thrive in the same warm, humid conditions that nurture sprouts. You might be tempted to toss these antioxidant-rich seedlings into salads and sandwiches right away. However, it is safer to cook the sprouts first. The germs will not be killed by washing.

4. Flour

You probably wouldn’t eat a spoon dipped in raw flour. What about cookie dough or cake batter, though? Although it is uncommon, raw flour can become contaminated with E. coli during harvesting, grinding, and sifting. E. coli, which can cause bloody diarrhea, vomiting, kidney failure, and death, is not killed by bleaching flour. Germs can also be found in boxed cake mixes and prepared cookie dough.

5. Chicken

This poultry is the most popular meat in the United States. Every year, approximately a million of us become ill as a result of eating chicken. Chickens, like all animals, have bacteria in their gut. Pathogens like campylobacter and salmonella can get on the birds during processing and packaging and make their way to your cutting board and utensils. Raw chicken should not be washed because it can contaminate your kitchen. Bacteria are killed by cooking at the proper temperature.

7. Oysters

Fresh oysters slurped right out of the shell can be a briny treat. Through their gills, these molluscs extract food from coastal waters. They work in the same way to trap viruses and bacteria. Vibriosis, which causes diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and chills in over 80,000 Americans each year, can be contracted by eating tainted raw oysters. Norovirus, also known as “stomach flu,” can also infect you. Cooking oysters is the only safe way to consume them.

6. Hot Dogs

These ballpark favourites are already cooked. Every year, Americans consume 20 billion of them. They can, however, pick up listeria after being packaged. To avoid illness, hot dogs should only be hot. Always reheat before serving.
