Wike: Rural Infrastructure Key to Boosting Local Economies in FCT

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has said that the provision of rural infrastructure across satellite towns will significantly stimulate local economies and reduce pressure on the city centre.
Wike made this known on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, while speaking to journalists after an extensive inspection of ongoing road projects across several satellite communities in the FCT.

The inspection tour covered major projects including the 13-kilometre Karu road, the Apo-Karshi road, the ongoing construction of the Bwari-Kubwa road, and the rehabilitation of the Gbazango (Arab Road) in Kubwa.

According to the Minister, the focus on developing rural and suburban areas aligns with the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure balanced development across the territory and discourage rural-urban migration.
He explained that improving accessibility through road infrastructure would unlock economic opportunities in satellite towns, thereby easing congestion in the city centre.

“The President emphasised that development should not be concentrated only in the city. Extending infrastructure to satellite towns will discourage migration and boost economic activities in those areas,” Wike said.

The Minister noted that the administration’s efforts have already begun to transform previously inaccessible routes, citing the Bwari-Kubwa road as an example of how infrastructure development can drive economic growth.

He expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work by contractors handling the projects, including Zeberced Nigeria Ltd, Arab Contractors, and Abdul Val Construction Company Ltd, adding that the projects are on track for timely completion.

At the Gbazango road project in Kubwa, Wike commended the use of a three-layer asphalting process, describing it as a high-quality standard that will have lasting economic benefits for residents.
He also hinted that some of the projects are expected to be commissioned during the third anniversary of President Tinubu’s administration.

On governance, Wike dismissed calls for the establishment of a new regulatory agency for the real estate sector, insisting that existing institutions such as the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) are capable of addressing challenges, including alleged exploitation by developers.

“I am not in support of creating multiple agencies. What matters is strengthening existing structures. We have already handled cases where developers were compelled to refund money to affected citizens,” he said.

As residents prepare to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the Minister called for unity and continued support for government initiatives, assuring that efforts to improve infrastructure and security across the FCT would be sustained.
He wished residents a peaceful and joyful Sallah celebration while reiterating the administration’s commitment to impactful governance.
