The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General OO Oluyede, has paid glowing tribute to fallen heroes of the Armed Forces of Nigeria while reaffirming the military’s unwavering resolve to defend the nation’s sovereignty and democratic values.

In a goodwill message to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, General Oluyede described the occasion as a solemn moment for Nigerians to reflect on the immense sacrifices made by officers and men who laid down their lives in the line of duty. He said their courage and patriotism remain permanently etched in the nation’s history, noting that their ultimate sacrifice was a calling to service and devotion to Nigeria.

The CDS extended heartfelt appreciation to the families of fallen personnel, acknowledging their resilience and assuring them that the Armed Forces would continue to honour the legacies of their loved ones. He stressed that although the departed cannot be replaced, their sacrifices would never be forgotten.

General Oluyede also commended serving officers and men across various theatres of operation for their professionalism, discipline and loyalty, often demonstrated under difficult and dangerous conditions. He praised their “battle scars” as silent symbols of valour and devotion to duty, adding that the Armed Forces would give no quarter to threats against Nigeria’s peace and security.

He reaffirmed that the military remains determined to confront and eliminate all security threats, both within and beyond Nigeria’s borders, stressing that adversaries of the nation would continue to face defeat.

On troop welfare, the CDS reiterated his commitment to improving the wellbeing of personnel in line with his military strategic philosophy, which prioritises enhanced joint operations, sound administration and improved welfare to strengthen operational effectiveness. He noted that the Armed Forces would continue to work closely with other security agencies and civil authorities, drawing lessons from veterans to address evolving security challenges.

General Oluyede expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his leadership, strategic direction and sustained support to the military. He assured Nigerians of the Armed Forces’ enduring commitment to safeguarding democracy and ensuring peace and stability across the country.

He also acknowledged the sacrifices of military families, particularly spouses, for their steadfast support on the home front.

The CDS concluded by urging Nigerians to use the remembrance period to promote national unity and reject divisive tendencies, stressing that the sacrifices of the Armed Forces highlight the need for a united and indivisible Nigeria. He encouraged citizens to wear the remembrance emblem with pride as a symbol of gratitude to the nation’s heroes.

General Oluyede prayed for the eternal rest of fallen heroes and called for continued peace, stability and prosperity in Nigeria.
