CDS half marathon championship: NSCDC emerges overall winner amid controversies

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp, NSCDC has emerged winners of this year’s edition of the Chief of Defence Staff, CDS half marathon championship which took place in Abuja on Saturday.

NSCDC did actually show their strength in Nigeria sports as their runners emerged top in both the men and women categories.

National women marathon champion, Debora Pam representing NSCDC returned first in the women category, carting away the top price, while Akusho Lydia of the Federal Fire Service finished second. Nancy Mathew of the Nigeria Immigration came third.

The NSCDC did actually showed their prowess in Nigeria sports as they swept the men Category, returning in the first and second positions. Though, the National Champion and also the defending champion, Emmanuel Gyan was beaten to the second position this time around by his colleague, Gideon Goyet. With that, Goyet became the proud winner of a brand new car.

The third place winner was however riddled with controversy, as the wrong person from the Nigeria Army was supposedly announced as the bronze medal winner which then prompted the officials of the Nigeria Army to vehemently launch a protest.

In the veteran category, Ayuba Dahiru from the Nigeria Army was the proud winner of another brand new car as he finished first ahead of Clifford Omoghibora from the Nigeria Police who returned second. The third position went to Dansabe Shehu of the Nigeria Road safety

Much as the championship went so well in the organizational ability, it was almost marred with avoidable controversies. The Nigeria Army refused to come out to receive their medal for the group event arguing that they came first ahead of the NSCDC personnel who were announced winners.

It took the intervention of their top officials to force them to march to the podium to receive their medals. Several other officials from other security outfits also complained bitterly about alterations in the results sheets, though to whose advantage www.theajasanews.com could not ascertain.
