The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced plans by the FCT Administration to explore strategic partnership opportunities with the Finland in advancing Abuja’s transformation into a modern, sustainable smart city.

Wike made this known on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, when he received Finland’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Sanna Selin, during a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja.

Speaking during the meeting, the minister identified infrastructure and agriculture as priority sectors for international collaboration, noting that the FCT is particularly interested in leveraging Finland’s expertise in green technology and digital innovation to support the city’s rapid growth.

“As a city, we are willing to cooperate with sister cities of other countries to see how we can partner in terms of infrastructure and agriculture,” Wike said. “We are open to collaboration in smart city technology and clean energy to optimize our relationship for the mutual benefit of both countries.”

The minister also expressed interest in a reciprocal engagement that would enable FCT officials to study Finland’s urban development models firsthand, describing such exchanges as vital for knowledge sharing and sustainable growth.

In addition, Wike emphasized the need for collaboration in waste management, noting that the FCT Administration is keen to engage capable firms with the expertise to manage the territory’s growing waste challenges.

“It will be good if we can have discussions on waste management with firms that have the right capacity. That is very key for us,” he said.

On security, the minister reassured the diplomatic community of the FCTA’s commitment to maintaining a safe and conducive environment. He pointed to the ongoing surge in construction activities across Abuja as evidence of improved security and stability in the nation’s capital.

“We owe you a duty to provide an enabling environment in terms of security for you to carry out your duties. Abuja is growing every day, and security has improved significantly,” Wike added.

Earlier, Ambassador Selin commended the FCT Administration for its extensive infrastructure development and the high level of safety provided for diplomatic missions in Abuja. She reaffirmed Finland’s readiness to support the city’s urban development through its global expertise.

“Finland recognizes the FCTA’s ongoing infrastructure investments and is ready to offer its expertise in planning, clean energy solutions, and sustainable construction to support rapid urban development in Abuja,” she said.

Selin added that Finland is keen to deepen economic cooperation with the FCT, particularly in renewable energy and digital services, in alignment with the administration’s development priorities.
