The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has renewed its partnership with the Beer Sectoral Group (BSG) in a bold move aimed at curbing drink-driving and reducing road crashes across Nigeria. The renewed collaboration, sealed through a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), was formally signed on Monday at the FRSC National Headquarters in Abuja. The agreement underscores a joint commitment to promote responsible alcohol consumption among drivers and strengthen enforcement against impaired driving.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, described the pact as a decisive step toward tackling one of the most preventable causes of road accidents in the country. He emphasized that the initiative goes beyond symbolism, representing a coordinated national response to save lives on Nigerian roads.
Also present at the event was the Chairman of the Beer Sectoral Group, Thibaut Boidin, who joined the Corps Marshal in executing the agreement. The partnership is expected to combine the FRSC’s enforcement authority and data-driven strategies with the industry’s extensive reach and resources to influence driver behavior.
Under the terms of the MoU, both parties will intensify nationwide advocacy campaigns, expand public education efforts, and deploy targeted interventions designed to address the root causes of drink-driving. The initiative aims to challenge and ultimately dismantle the culture that associates alcohol consumption with driving.
The ceremony also witnessed the presence of top industry executives, including Girish Sharma of Guinness Nigeria Plc and Nicholas Kade of International Breweries Plc, alongside BSG Executive Director Abiola Lasehinde and senior FRSC management officials. Both organisations affirmed that success over the next five years will be measured not just in reduced crash statistics, but in lives saved and families preserved. They reiterated a clear message to motorists nationwide: responsible drinking is non-negotiable, and driving under the influence will not be tolerated.
The renewed pact signals a strengthened public-private alliance in Nigeria’s road safety efforts, setting a benchmark for collaborative action against traffic-related fatalities.
