Politicians have some key people they hold in high esteem since the game of politics is where political loyalty plays a key role.

To that extent, they can make some uncommon sacrifices to show rare loyalty to those they see as their political masters. Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State is said to be nursing presidential ambition in 2023. His activities, body languages and the arguments he backs all seem to support the idea that he may be eyeing the number one seat as speculations have it.

However, Wike openly revealed one man he would back for President in 2023. In fact, Wike openly made it as a vow to that man that he would heavily back him for President in 2023. The man is no other person than former President Goodluck Jonathan. Wike made this strong promise to Jonathan as a way of discouraging the Ex-President from dumping the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to join the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

By that promise, it means that Wike has made it clear that he would give up his own reported presidential ambition to heavily back Jonathan for the post of President in 2023. But, Wike gave a condition to back Jonathan. That condition is that Jonathan must contest in PDP. That means that while Wike would sacrifice his own reported presidential ambition and back Jonathan instead, the former President would also have to give up the desire to join the ruling APC amid all the juicy promises the party made to him. Jonathan will need to stay back in PDP and contest for the number one post as Wike advised him.

To make things easier for Jonathan, Wike and three other PDP Governors (Seyi Makinde, Godwin Obaseki and Udom Emmanuel) from the South have used a smart way to ensure that the PDP’s zoning arrangement is changed. In that case, they ensured that the post of PDP National Chairman is zoned to the North to pave way for the South to get the party’s presidential ticket. Jonathan is from the South. This is a way of making things easier than before when it appeared as if the PDP presidential ticket would be given to the North in 2023 whereas APC plans to give its own ticket to the South.

This could be one of the major reasons why Jonathan had considered dumping PDP for APC since the ruling party seemed to prefer giving its ticket to his region in 2023. But, with the way things are now that PDP is poised to give South its presidential ticket, Jonathan is most likely to remain in PDP to contest especially after Wike vowed to back him.
