The push for safer roads in Nigeria received a high-level boost on Friday as Honourable Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria urged citizens to take personal responsibility for preventing road crashes.

Speaking during her investiture as an Honorary Special Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Abuja, Justice Nyesom-Wike said road safety must move beyond institutional enforcement to a shared civic duty embraced by all Nigerians.

She challenged citizens to go beyond passive concern and actively participate in the FRSC Special Marshals scheme, stressing that discipline, vigilance, and collective commitment are critical to reducing fatalities on the nation’s highways.

The ceremony, held under the Federal Capital Territory Sector Command, was presided over by Zonal Commanding Officer RS7HQ, Assistant Corps Marshal Comfort Asom, who represented the Corps Marshal. Delivering the Corps Marshal’s message, Asom described Special Marshals as key drivers of grassroots advocacy and urged volunteers to uphold values of integrity, patriotism, and service.

The event, attended by senior judicial officers including Justices of the Court of Appeal, underscored growing institutional collaboration in tackling road safety challenges.

Also speaking, FCT Sector Commander, Corps Commander Tijani Iliyasu, said the command is intensifying efforts to expand public engagement and deepen awareness campaigns across the capital territory. He noted that the enlistment of prominent figures like Justice Nyesom-Wike would strengthen advocacy and improve compliance with traffic laws.

In her acceptance remarks, Justice Nyesom-Wike warned against dangerous driving habits and called for a nationwide shift in attitude, urging Nigerians to avoid behaviors that put lives at risk.

The investiture signals the FRSC’s renewed strategy of leveraging influential voices to drive behavioral change and reinforce a culture of safety on Nigerian roads.
