The South West Zonal chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has distanced itself from a press conference reportedly held in Ibadan on Monday, describing its organisers as impostors with no link to the party.
The purported briefing had claimed that the zone condemned former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, endorsed Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, and pledged loyalty to a Turaki-led National Working Committee.
However, in a statement issued by the Zonal Publicity Secretary, Akinloye Oyeniyi, the PDP said no such event was authorised or held by its leadership.
Oyeniyi explained that the Zonal Chairman, Engr. Deji Doherty, was in Abuja attending the 108th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party at the time, stressing that no zonal official convened any press conference in Ibadan.
He described the claims surrounding the event as false and misleading, insisting that those behind it neither represent the party nor hold any mandate at any level of its structure.
According to him, the group lacks legitimacy and is not recognised by the PDP from the ward to the national level. He further noted that the absence of key leadership positions, such as a Zonal Vice Chairman, underscores the group’s lack of structure and credibility.
The PDP accused the individuals of attempting to destabilise the party, adding that their actions have failed and exposed their lack of acceptance within the party and the wider public.
Reaffirming its position, the South West chapter declared its loyalty to the Abdulrahman-led National Working Committee and the party’s national leader, Nyesom Wike.
The party also urged members of the public, the media, and its supporters to disregard the Ibadan briefing, emphasising that only statements issued through recognised party channels under the leadership of Engr. Deji Doherty should be considered official.
It advised those behind the disputed gathering to follow due process if they wish to engage with the party, noting that media appearances or propaganda cannot confer legitimacy.
