Pastor Olumide Emmanuel spoke at Kingdom Wealth Conference, Day 2 Evening Session. While speaking on Welfare, He read the book of Proverbs 28:27 which says:

“He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse”

According to him, the Bible says that anyone that gives to the poor will not lack but he didn’t say the poor will be free from poverty. He said that the giver does not lack, but the poor will remain poor. So giving to the poor does not prosper the poor; giving to the poor does not solve the problem of the poor, but it’s a covenant obligation that helps you never to be poor.

He further revealed that he that gives to the poor shall not lack, doesn’t mean that the poor will not remain poor. He told his members that it is their responsibility to ensure that for every money that comes into their hands, a portion belongs to the poor. A portion is a seed of welfare, but to think that your welfare will prosper people, you lie! The solution to poverty is not welfare but welfare is something you must do so that you won’t be poor. You give downwards so that you solidify the ground so that you will not go under. You give up so that you can go up. So if you give to the poor, it’s only to guarantee that you will not be poor but it doesn’t also guarantee that the poor will never be poor again.

He revealed that the solution to poverty is empowerment. Empowerment is knowledge, not palliative. So all the time people are always asking what the church is doing for the poor. The poor that cannot buy diesel. “so we will give the money to the poor and all of us will come here now and stay in darkness,” he asked. He said that the solution to poverty is empowerment and advised them to preach the gospel to the poor.

Finally, he said that giving to the poor is your covenant obligation but that does not prosper the poor. Welfare is a temporary relief measure so that things will not get worse.
