According to a report by Punch, the students of Bubendorff Memorial Grammar School, Adazi-Nnukwu in Anambra did the unthinkable today, they resumed the new academic session by wearing traditional Igbo top, ‘Isi-Agu for their first school assembly. This gesture is commendable and should be replicated by other schools in Nigeria.
Many Nigerian praised the choice of the outfit by the school because it is a way of growing our local content and replacing the culture of the white. This is commendable. It’s already happening in many schools in Ghana. Let us look inward and buy our own to grow ourselves. The same thing was done in Osun State under former Governor Rauf Aregbesola; the Yorubas hailed the idea albeit without questioning the issues of positioning the mindset, conscience, etc.
But we must let those future leaders know that cultural values are not only embedded in uniforms or external use but in our minds which automatically translate to active conscience, morals, courtesy, decorum, a positive and innovative mindset. Nigerian’s value for human life and coexistence has dropped below per. Our world thrives on statistics, the statistics of those with poor, avarice, parochial, bigotry, mediocrity mindsets are more than those with cultural uniforms. Emphasis and reiteration should be more on reforming the minds of our future leaders, not hypocritical frivolities.
Many Nigerians are glad that our people are seriously waking up. In Europe, it will be difficult to see them practicing anything from Africa, but they will want Africa to do everything they are doing in the name of civilization that has almost eliminated our culture finish. Not only about wearing the ISI AGU, but the spirit, the true culture, sense of reasoning, true character, and the nature of a Nigerian man be instilled in them. Without imbibing our values, beliefs, and norms in them, it means no future for us.
