President Muhammadu Buhari finally constituted the board of the NNPC which will now be known as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, the NNPC.
This development comes as the President, in his capacity as the minister of Petroleum, approved the incorporation of the NNPC in consonance with Section 53(1) of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.
With this, the NNPC will be mandated to act in its capacity as a commercial institution that is profit-oriented.
From an expert opinion about the new board, a lot of trust and hope has been bestowed on the team to move the NNPC from being a normal government parastatal to a formidable institution that will provide more profit for the country.
One thing, however, that has made news is the formation of the new board of the NNPC.
This new board is headed by Senator Ifeanyi Ararume from Imo state.
Apart from being the highest institution as far as the Oil and gas sector is concerned in Nigeria, this institution can be said to be the key to the Nigerian economy. This is confirmed as the President also doubles as the minister of petroleum, an office that cannot be ceded to another person due to the sensitivity of the office.
Now the claims of the south-east being marginalized most times, have been shut down by some Nigerians who believe the region has been blessed as they occupy most juicy positions in government.
The agitation for recognition has been loudest of recent, as the region has been thrown into some sort of chaos following the threat by some hoodlums to unleash mayhem on residents who failed to observe the sit-at-home order in some states of the southeast.
Another case has been the insistence of the southern governors for the political parties to zone the presidency to the south.
This appointment shows that the FG is gradually bringing governance to the region and this shows the Federal Government has a lot of trust in the region to deliver on its mandate.
With the appointment of Senator Ararume, the region can comfortably boast of having that inclusiveness in the Buhari-led administration and this will also to a great extent, stifle the cries of marginalization.
With two Board members, Ararume and Senator Okadigbo, it is now left for the region to do what it wants with the appointment.
As it has been rightly said, no region in the country can talk of being marginalized because every region has States and every state has governors, senators and house of representative members who make decisions on behalf of citizens.
Citizens should learn to hold onto their representatives first if there is no government presence in their region.
Ararume’s appointment is a win for the southeast and this appointment also goes to carpet all rumours of the Buhari administration not being fair to the Igbos.
