The Chairman of the 2021 Nigeria Basketball Federation Electoral Committee, Dr Lanre Glover has promised to bring his wealth of experience to bear as the election approaches.

The two time Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) while speaking with NBBF Media after the release of the electoral guidelines said accepting to serve as the Chairman of the committee was easy.

Having been part of over 20 elections at the national and international stage, Glover said he is more than equipped to midwife an electoral process that all Nigerians and basketball stakeholders will be proud of.

Speaking on its motivation, Dr Glover said, “Ministry put out a communication that some federations based on their constitutions are allowed to organise their own elections and having been a member of the Olympic Committee, I know that the Olympic Committee demanded to see the international approval of the statutes of all federations

“Secondly, the congress of the NBBF approved the statutes and was confirmed by FIBA. If a congress approves a statute and it’s confirmed by their international federation, that means it is legal as far as I am concerned”.

“Having seen that the process is legal, I accepted to serve. First, I will be bringing in a lot of experience to the election”, Dr Glover said.

As an advocate of independence of sports federations and their internal governance, having an opportunity to organise this historic election into the NBBF board was not something he was going to overlook.

“To prove that associations can be truly independent, I founded the Nigerian Triathlon Union over 12 years ago and we have been running and also participated at the African Games representing Nigeria”.

He commended the Honorable Minister of Sports, Chief Sunday Dare for taking a step in the right direction.

‘There is always this misconception that if the associations are independent, they are free of government. That is not true”.

“The Minister is the government representative in all matters of sports in this country.”

He is optimistic that with all members of the electoral committee being men and women of strong and reliable character, a hitch free election will be organised.
