As the February 18, 2023 presidential race draws closer, influential politicians who want to contest for the position of Nigerian President are making their intentions known to gain the supports of the power brokers and the leadership of their parties.

The incumbent Vice President of the country, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo is one of the key political players who have been heavily linked to the 2023 presidency.

A report by the Peoples Gazette revealed that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has informed President Muhammadu Buhari of his intention to contest for the position of Nigerian President in 2023.

Osinbajo allegedly informed the president of his intention to run for president in 2023 when he visited his boss on new year day and sought the blessing of his principal who did not make immediate commitments.

Tinubu’s Rumoured Ambition Might Be Affected

With the move of the President to make his intention known to President Buhari and seek his blessing, there are strong indications that the rumoured presidential ambition of Tinubu might be affected.

Although Tinubu has not declared officially to run for president, speculations have increased after he said he wouldn’t turn down the call by Nigerians to run for the presidency.

If the report of Osinbajo’s move is anything to go by, it would be difficult for Tinubu to pick the presidential ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

As the current Vice President of the country, it would be easy for Osinbajo to get the backing of the President and power brokers within the ruling party than Tinubu who is not in the presidency.

There are also arguments that it would be easy for Osinbajo to continue from where Buhari stopped and tackle the current challenges facing the nation if he eventually takes over the baton of leadership cf President Buhari in 2023 because he is part of the current dispensation.

With this development, Tinubu’s camp known as the South-West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA) and others who have been mobilising for Tinubu to pick the presidential ticket of the ruling party might not be happy because the move by Osinbajo is capable of dividing the votes from South-West during APC presidential primaries.
