Your media department is not doing enough- Ekweremadu chides Custom’s boss

Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu has taken a swipe at the media department of the Nigeria Customs service noting that they had not done enough to inform Nigerians on the real reasons for the closure of the Nigeria Boarders.

Ekweremadu gave this admonition Wednesday when the leadership of the Nigeria customs appeared before the joint committee of the Nigeria Senate and the House of Representative members.

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Hameed Ali s had elucidated on the reason the Nigeria boarder had been closed, maintaining that over time Nigeria boarders have been exploited to bring in several contraband goods to the detriment of the health of Nigerians. He particularly emphasized that ninety percent of the foreign rice brought into the country through the boarder were expired

He stressed that Nigeria had been made the deport of substandard goods and the only way to reduce the in flocks was to temporally close the boarder to allow them time to fashion out more permanent solution to curb the menace.

The custom boss also narrated how the Nation was losing thousands of barrels of oil to smugglers revealing that since the closure of the boarder the activities of the oil smugglers have greatly been reduced.

He also noted that the closure of the boarders has helped in reducing the activities of bandits in Nigeria, stressing that they realized that lots of weapons were making their way to the country through the boarders.

After listening to the submission of the
Comptroller-General, the former Deputy Senate President who was indeed impressed with what he heard wondered why the custom media has not done enough to sensitize Nigerians on the reason for the closure.

He argued that most Nigerians do not have the real information, advising him to carry out more media hype to educate them on the reason for their actions.
