The Nigeria contingent to the just concluded African U-18/ U-20 Athletics Championships in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire may have traveled to the tournament by road, a situation some critics have lashed on to condemn the leadership of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, but former jumper, hurdler and sprinter, Seigha Porbeni is full praise for the AFN leadership.

Speaking, Porbeni noted that even in the face of the difficult situation of the trip to and fro, the exposure and experienced gained by the Athletes from attending the championship was more than enough consolation.

“It was sad we left Nigeria for Abidjan without a kobo, but I must commend officials of the AFN, and the governments of Delta and Lagos states for providing some logistics for the team.

“Majority of our athletes must have gained a lot of exposure from the trip because it was the first time some of them traveled outside Nigeria. We finished third behind South Africa and Kenya in the overall medals table, but for us, it was more than the result. Exposure means a lot for young athletes, and that was our major gain from the trip to Abidjan,” Porbeni, an ex-Director of sports in Delta State stated.

It is on record that the Nigeria Ministry of Youth and Sports did not release a dime to the Federation for them to attend the Championship. The AFN president, Ibrahim Gusau ensured that the Nigeria contingent was able to attend the Africa junior Athletics championships by sponsoring their camping at Ijebu Ode and their eventual travelling.
