Former Nigerian Olympic medalist,
Christy Opara-Thompson has hailed the Organizers of the ongoing Abuja Youth Games saying the Nation is in dire need of Games like this to get back on track in the development and promotion of sports in the country.

Speaking with www.theajasanews.com, Christy who was one of the special guest of honour at the opening ceremony of the Games that took place at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola stadium on Saturday said she is very elated by the the initiative to bring together youths from the various secondary schools in Abuja.

‘To tell you the truth, as a former Athlete, I am impressed by this initiative. This is really very noble. This is what the Ministry of Youth and Sports should encourage because this is the only way we can go back to the grass root to discover future Athletes that can represent the Nation in the future,”

She also charged the initiator of the program not to be deterred by challenges of organizing such big events maintaining that as long as she does not give up, the program will surely develop into something very big in the future where she will be celebrated.

The former Nigerian Olympic medalist who effectively combined sports with education in the United States of America also charged the participating students to be focused and determined stressing that sports has the ability to take them further than they could ever imagine.

The opening ceremony had sporting dignitaries, officials from the the Ministry of Youth and Sports, members of civil societies and staffs of some of the Embassies in Abuja all gracing the occasion. They were treated to dancing performances by the students, and visiting artistes.
